Five languages are spoken in this story, but only English, French and Spanish were subtitled. The choice was based on one of the main themes in the movie being: ‘understanding each other beyond language’. No other language will be subtitled because if we did, much of the meaning would be lost in translation. A Lyrically Visual Story "Rice" is an immersive story told in an almost magical way. It starts out with a soldier in the Falkland Islands War performing a merciful act, and the resulting punishment he receives. He meets a young woman who starts to help him heal from the wounds that he suffered. You will not see a movie like this anytime soon. Writer-Director Alex Vargas has crafted a movie so visually distinct and exact, that watching it is fascinating even if it didn't have a story. As the movie progresses, both lead characters move toward their ultimate conclusion, with a resolution that is as real and grounded as the imagery is poetic. Subtitling in post production.

With insufficient knowledge of the French language, Alex worked with three French language consultants before committing to a translation that would represent what was meant in the two other subtitled languages he does know. Only then did he settle for a meeting with Eva Kvorning who used to be a professional subtitler in the three languages used on this motion picture. In collaboration with Alex, she adjusted meaning as needed for the shortest translation of every line. As part of post production, this was a very rewarding three day experience to Alex. It took place in Denmark with Alex’s 5.1 surround sound mixing studio set up in a modern cabin in Gilleleje. There, three musical compositions where completed before the full 5.1 surround sound audio mix was locked. A second round of color correction was also competed before returning to California. That was a 13 month job in isolation that was only broken for jumping into the cold ocean on daily basis, bike rides to acquire provisions and collecting wood for the fire from right outside of the cabin. Few friendly visits occurred, including Dan Stangerup’s assistance as a media consultant. Executive Producer Beth Hayes was also there to check on development.
